Derogations on Social Networking

Social Networking – the only source into the lives of World’s residents!

A study shows that every 5 out of 9 people use their cell phones more for “getting connected” using social networking, than they do for what Alexander Graham Bell actually invented the vintage masterpiece for! These social networking platforms could be anything from Orkut, to FB, to Twitter, to LinkedIn to Blogs!

Fair work Australia, a tribunal for national workplace relations, past year dealt with a case “Fitzgerald v Smith T/A Escape Hair Design” where Fitzgerald, a hairdresser was sacked because of her comment on FB, which read "Xmas bonus alongside a job warning, followed by no holiday pay!!! Whoooooo! The Hairdressing Industry rocks man!! AWESOME!!!" – Thank god she didn’t mention the salon’s name and the viewing of her comment was visible only to her “friends”, else the case would have gone further ahead… What was noted from this particular incident is that however generic a comment be, if on a public forum, it affects an employee-employer relation (in corporate scenario).

A Similar case was observed in New Zealand last year as well, where personal rage was taken to public forum because the employee continued to stretch on her work related issues on her FB account. And since the language used was not only strong (not assertive), but also abusive, the matter took a serious turn!

Why go so far to these countries, when we can see that every time when we log into our accounts. One of my friends interestingly mentions -

”since FB is the only platform where my rage gets solace, I maintain separate accounts for my personal and professional lives.”

Smart guy! But smarter boss who found out this trick!! (Thankfully, they are good friends now!)

A modest view of links you establish in your immediate neighborhood the moment you create a new profile

Most of the companies prefer “studying” a candidate’s profile on a Social Networking Site, before hiring him. In fact, some businesses even use these sites like YouTube, FB and LinkedIn for marketing, Recruitment and other such business opportunities. Then there are companies who have strategically modeled their system to cache on these sites to tap an individual’s personal information. Hence it becomes imperative to keep a check on the extent of personal information one makes publicly accessible! Every bit that leaves your computer leaves more exposed and vulnerable. So while you want your friends to know that you are throwing a party at your house tonight, don’t consequently invite your enemies. Think wisely.
